Doug and Amy Smith have been running Exo Roast Co., a coffee roastery and cafe, for several years. Prior to their shared history in coffee, both were educators with a particular passion for the cultural geography of Latin America and the borderlands and projects grounded in useful knowledge. The Smiths bring to SAWS their affection for the Arizona-Sonora Region and their hope for a future rooted in community, education, and engagement.
Southern Arizona Work Space is an open warehouse with a small kitchen. The building itself was a former glass warehouse for several decades.
Amy Smith is the manager of Exo Roast Co. and a former educator at City High School. Her past focus in education was in cultural geography with an emphasis on the history of the City of Tucson. She studied at Prescott College and has traveled in Europe, Africa, and Mexico. She enjoys cooking with native and regional wild foods and playing with the chickens that she raises in her backyard with her husband and two-year-old daughter, Alma.
Doug Smith is the lead roaster and green coffee buyer for Exo Roast Co. Smith received a Ph.D. in Cultural and Social Anthropology from Stanford University and conducted years of research on indigenous coffee farming communities in Puebla, Mexico. He has been involved in non-profit organizations and projects in the Southern Arizona borderlands with a particular emphasis on urban gardening, sustainability, and poverty reduction. He grows many varieties of agaves in his back yard and raises chickens with his wife and two-year-old daughter, Alma.
